First Grade Highlights
February 1, 2018
Dear First Grade Families;
We had a blast learning about marine mammals at the Shorebird Park Nature Center. The students enjoyed rotating through hands-on learning stations including: sounds, feeding, blubber, and conservation. The naturalists were very impressed with all the knowledge our students had about marine mammals. Please see field trip photos below.
On Monday, February 12th we will be celebrating the 100th Day of School!!!
Here is your child's "homework": Please have your child make a collection of 100 things. They must be things that can fit in your child's backpack. Please make sure the collection is labeled with your child's name. Here's a hint: It is easiest for many children to count by tens. So if you organize ten sets of ten, you have 100! Your child may bring them to class anytime before February 13th. We would like to have every 1st grader participate.
We will be having a small Valentine’s Day celebration February 14th. We will have V-Day stations: delivering cards, art project, a treat, and heart math station. It is not required that your child make Valentine’s Cards. However, if your child decided to make them, we ask that they make one for every student in our class.
Please do not send your child to school with candy – thank you!

Looking for a fun family activity over February Break? Count birds! Launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, The Great Backyard Bird Count is underway from February 16-19, 2018. All you need to do is tally the numbers and kinds of birds you see. On vacation? You can count from any location in the world!
Marine Mammals Field Trip!
Writer's Workshop Buddies!!!
January 30th:
A frequent piece of the P.E. curriculum is station work. 4-8 different areas of the yard will be designated with various exercises and activities involving running, jumping, throwing and more. Recently, 1st grade has made great use of this technique, leading to improvements in many areas.
